1st World Cup 1930 - Uruguay

13 countries participated in the first ever World Cup by invitation of the host country Uruguay. Decided in Amsterdam 28 May 1928, the tournament played all games in Montevideo from July 13-30, 1930. The host, who won two Olympic gold medals in 1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam Games, beat Argentina by 4:2 to be the first Champion.

No stamps were issued to commemorate this historical tournament, but there were four special cancels used before the competition. All are scarce with Type I and Type II b the rarest.

Type I – Certamen de Confraternidad

Rating:                     up!

This is one of rarest among the four. Seldom seen applied with date cancels on complete covers. One source indicates that it was used for only 9 days in early 1930.
