Machine Advertising Cancels of the 1952 Oslo Winter Olympics (1st. ed)

To collect any early Olympic Winter Games is a challenge simply because there is limited postal evidence available. In the case of Oslo 1952 Games, I am rather delighted by the quality (and pricey) and quantity of the material available. Although Norway Post issued only three stamps to commemorate the occasion, there were over a dozen of advertising machine cancels used before and during the Games. Seeing little literature on those, mostly scarce, cancels, I attempt to have a quick introduction of them along with their scarcity based on my own findings.

Two types of machine cancels were used: 1. Continuous Roller and 2. Regular Two-line Text

1. Continuous Roller

Br. = Brev avdelingen = Letter Department was used at the main post office in Oslo, hence the most common one.

VIKA

It shouldn’t be a surprise to rank this one as the “common” one next to Br. Roller above.

4

SKOYEN

Recognized as one of the rarest, if not the rarest, advertising machine cancels.

Notes

All of them are scarce if not rare. I have seen most of them but not all. I believe Homansby is rather rare.
